MPs launch group to tackle landmines
Thu, 26 Jan 2012 06:00:01 +0100 | Guardian Unlimited Science
Survey shows the use of anti-personnel mines in 2011 was the highest for seven yearsA crossparty group of MPs and peers will be launched on Thursday to combat the growing scourge of landmines, which kill and maim thousands of innocent people every year. The group, chaired by Pauline Latham, the Conservative MP for Mid Derbyshire, is being set up in the wake of a survey showing that the use of anti-personnel mines in 2011 was the highest for seven years."This danger must far outweigh their military effectiveness," Latham said. "Through this new all-party parliamentary group on landmines and unexploded weapons of conflict, we will be holding a number of investigations into their current use, the efforts of agencies to clear existing mines, and the ways we can provide them with every support."...

Characterization of yield stress and slip behavior of skin/hair care gels using steady flow and LAOS measurements and their correlation with sensorial attributes
Mon, 23 Jan 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | International Journal of Cosmetic Science
AbstractGels made with three different polymers widely used as rheology modifiers in cosmetic formulations (crosslinked poly(acrylic acid), crosslinked poly(maleic acid‐alt‐methyl vinyl ether) copolymer, and crosslinked poly(acrylic acid‐co‐vinyl pyrrolidone) copolymer) were characterized by rheological and sensory evaluation methods to determine the relationship between sensorial perception and corresponding rheological parameters. Both conventional rheological characterization methods and a more recent method, Fourier Transform Rheology with Large Amplitude Oscillatory Flow data (LAOS), were utilized to characterize the material with and without wall slip. Sensorial analyses were implemented in‐vivo to evaluate the perceived ease of initial and rub‐out spreadability, cushion,...

Assessing the Population Status of a Tree Species Using Distance Sampling: Aquilaria crassna (Thymelaeaceae) in Northern Laos
Thu, 19 Jan 2012 12:25:10 +0100 | Computational Intelligence and Neuroscience
Lack of reliable and accurate field data affect assessments of population status of tree species, especially tropical taxa with broad distributions. Use of distance sampling techniques may help to overcome the problem. This paper describes a method for estimation of absolute density of a rare tree species with scattered and clumped distribution, using line transect distance sampling. The method was applied to previously harvested populations of Aquilaria crassna Pierre ex H. Lec. (Thymelaeaceae) at four sites in Northern Laos. This species is destructively harvested to yield agarwood, probably the world’s most valuable nontimber forest product and categorised as ”critically endangered“. The average density of felled A. crassna trees at the four sites was 2.2 ha&...

Environment world review of the year: '2011 rewrote the record books'
Thu, 22 Dec 2011 12:45:00 +0100 | Guardian Unlimited Science
The ecologically tumultuous year saw record greenhouse gas emissions, melting Arctic sea ice, natural disasters and extreme weather – and the world's second worst nuclear disasterThe year 2011 was another ecologically tumultuous year with greenhouse gases rise to record levels, Arctic sea ice nearly equalling 2007's record melt, and temperatures the 11th highest ever recorded. It was marked on the ground by unparalleled extremes of heat and cold in the US, droughts and heatwaves in Europe and Africa and record numbers of weather-related natural disasters. In addition, 2011 saw the world population reach 7 billion, the second worst nuclear disaster and record investments in renewable energy. The 41 sea, land and air indicators used by the US government's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admi...

Identification of the Geographic Origin of Dendrobium thyrsiflorum on Chinese Herbal Medicine Market Using Trinucleotide Microsatellite Markers.
Tue, 13 Dec 2011 19:42:03 +0100 | Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin
Authors: Yuan YH, Hou BW, Xu HJ, Luo J, Ding XY Abstract The stems of Dendrobium thyrsiflorum RCHB.F. ex ANDRé can be processed into an important class of Traditional Chinese Medicine named "Huangcao Shihu," which has diverse curative effects, such as nourishing yin and clearing away unhealthy heat, benefiting the stomach, and promoting the production of body fluid. The identification of the geographical origin of D. thyrsiflorum is vital for preserving its natural resource and ensuring the quality of "Huangcao Shihu." In order to identify the origin of D. thyrsiflorum on Chinese herbal medicine market, 14 D. thyrsiflorum-specific microsatellite markers were developed in this study. Assignment tests were performed by the microsatellite marker analysis coupled with three new statis...

Bartonella and Rickettsia in arthropods from the Lao PDR and from Borneo, Malaysia.
Mon, 05 Dec 2011 05:00:00 +0100 | Comparative immunology, microbiology and infectious diseases.
Authors: Kernif T, Socolovschi C, Wells K, Lakim MB, Inthalad S, Slesak G, Boudebouch N, Beaucournu JC, Newton PN, Raoult D, Parola P Abstract Rickettsioses and bartonelloses are arthropod-borne diseases of mammals with widespread geographical distributions. Yet their occurrence in specific regions, their association with different vectors and hosts and the infection rate of arthropod-vectors with these agents remain poorly studied in South-east Asia. We conducted entomological field surveys in the Lao PDR (Laos) and Borneo, Malaysia by surveying fleas, ticks, and lice from domestic dogs and collected additional samples from domestic cows and pigs in Laos. Rickettsia felis was detected by real-time PCR with similar overall flea infection rate in Laos (76.6%, 69/90) and Borneo (74.4...

Two non-allelic nuclear genes restore fertility in a gametophytic pattern and enhance abiotic stress tolerance in the hybrid rice plant.
Sun, 04 Dec 2011 05:00:00 +0100 | TAG. Theoretical and Applied Genetics
In this study, however, a HL-type hybrid variety named HongLian You6 had approximately 75% normal (viable) pollen rather than the expected 50%. To resolve this discrepancy, several fertility segregation populations, including F(2) and BC(1)F(1) derived from the HL-CMS line Yuetai A crossed with the restorer line 9311, were constructed and subjected to genetic analysis. A gametophytic restoration model was discovered to involve two non-allelic nuclear restorer genes, Rf5 and Rf6. The Rf5 had been previously identified using a positional clone strategy. The Rf6 gene represents a new restorer gene locus, which was mapped to the short arm of chromosome 8. The hybrid F(1) plants containing one restorer gene, either Rf5 or Rf6, displayed 50% normal pollen grains with I(2)-KI solution; however, t...

Trade circles: aspirations and ethnicity in commercial sex in Laos.
Thu, 01 Dec 2011 05:00:00 +0100 | Culture, Health and Sexuality
Authors: Lyttleton C, Vorabouth S Abstract The contours of commercial sex in Lao PDR are significantly shaped by forces facilitating the entry of women from one ethnic group, the Khmu, into this service industry niche. Agricultural transitions, development policies, changing gender roles, ethnic hierarchies, snowballing recruitment networks and growing capitalist sensibilities collectively prompt poor Khmu women to aspire to material gain via selling beer and sex. Their predominance in lower echelons of the sex industry demonstrates how forces of neoliberal expansion build on both opportunity and enduring marginalisation and that material economies are closely intertwined with intimate economies as trajectories of modernisation evolve in contemporary Laos.
